What's so special about fiber?Fiber optic telecommunications lines were a niche service for special applications. You can find them at ISPs, Fortune 500 companies, science labs, video production companies, and more. Only the most technically demanding and financially well equipped companies have purchased fiber optics. They can also choose to be closer to existing fiber optic availability points (POPs) to reduce construction costs.
This may still be true if you need ample bandwidth for your data center or minimal latency for processes like high-speed trading. In these cases, the best solution may be to pack up your gear and take it to a "transport hotel" or "placement center." But even if you do, you still have the problem of how to connect your offices to the data center. Yesterday some T1 or DS3 lines would facilitate this connection. Increasingly, only fiber optics will do the job.
Call it a utility
We are fast approaching a time when fiber bandwidth will be on par with electricity, water, sewer, and gas. Businesses simply won't consider places that don't offer these basics.
Here because. Today's business processes are highly automated. Paper documents disappear as fast as they can be destroyed. A writing machine? What is this? Everyone has a computer on their desk, a smartphone in their pocket, and probably a tablet to carry instead of the yellow notepad. Productivity is the name of the game, and that means moving data through an organization in bytes, not printed characters.
With the massive migration from on-premises data centers to cloud service providers, the demand for fiber has grown to critical proportions. This means that all the data that used to go to the data center down the hall on high-speed fiber and copper lines now has to travel across the country to get to the new cloud data center. This requires significantly higher MAN and WAN bandwidth, as well as low latency to enable interactive business applications and real-time services such as VoIP telephony and video conferencing.
How much bandwidth is enough?
Entry-level bandwidth for small businesses and independent professional studios is now around 10-30 Mbps, up from just a few Mbps a decade ago. Most midsize businesses can use 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet today and will soon need 1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet. In fact, Gigabit Internet access is emerging as the new ISP standard for businesses and consumers. This awesome and unique app? 10 Gbps and 100 Gbps services required.
Fortunately, fiber optics easily handles these bandwidths. Copper telecommunication lines are falling below 10 Mbit/s even with new Ethernet over copper transmission technology. If you want 50 or 100 Mbit/s speed, it is best to stay near the Telecom office. The exception is cable broadband, which can go up to gigabits (1 Gbit/s). The actual cable is used for building connection only. The rest of the network is fiber optic.
Fiber Bandwidth Options
The two main competing technologies for enterprise fiber are SONET and Ethernet over fiber. SONET is an older and more established technology developed by telephone companies. Ethernet over fiber is rapidly replacing SONET because it is more scalable and cheaper.
Scalability is important because you never know how much bandwidth you'll need. You might start with 10 Mbps and need to quickly increase to 50 or 100 Mbps. Then you'll want to increase to 500 or 1000 Mbps. With Ethernet over fiber, you can only pay for what you need up front, and then increase bandwidth as needed. No hardware changes are required as long as you have a port that can handle the maximum bandwidth required.
Purchase of a fiber optic building
"Illumination" is the term used to describe a fiber that is assembled and activated or "illuminated" by one or more laser sources. In general, it's easy to get all the bandwidth you need once you have fiber installed. The optical fiber itself has almost unlimited capacity and can serve many users in the same building.
Competing airlines are now looking for suitable buildings that are not lit and installed before anyone else. As a general rule, the building is illuminated only by an opponent who is permanently there. All tenants enter into a contract with a service provider for the requested service.
If you own a building, offering fiber broadband service as one of your utilities is highly recommended. It is necessary to move the rooms (via fiber optics) to the telecommunications room. So each tenant can order what they need, like other utilities, and pay the bill. Some building owners have found it useful to order very high bandwidth services themselves and then distribute them to tenants for profit. The customer becomes a kind of service provider.
