High performance, high cost. Low performance, low cost. This was the story of corporate broadband WAN connections. You can stick with a cable or DSL internet package, but the differences in reliability and performance can bother you. Or pay for a proprietary line solution or MPLS network and enjoy high reliability, low latency, and consistent line speeds...if you can afford the price. If there was only one way to make the Internet work like an MPLS network, it would be at a huge cost. Well, thanks to SDN, there is now.

SDNs can manage Internet connections to replace MPLS networks. What is SDN used for?
SDN is the password for the most recent communications connections. You will sometimes see it described as SDN or hybrid SDN-WAN. Here's what these abbreviations mean and how they can benefit you.

SDN stands for Software Defined Networking. This is to distinguish them from the traditional hardware-based networks created by telephone companies and later used to create private digital lines and backbones of the Internet. Today's IP networks are filled with individual routers and switches that dictate the architecture of the network. MPLS networks have a much more rigorous architecture created by specialized naming switches that direct the traffic.

The software-defined network intelligently transforms how the network makes decisions from hard-to-change routing and routing activities to software that regulates the behavior of hardware elements at every moment. SDN-WAN is a wide area network operating under the control of SDN. This can be a combination of the Internet, private lines, and MPLS networks, all connected together to create a virtual WAN.

What is internet blocking?
The allure of the internet is a siren song, it can be easily adopted, but sometimes it has disastrous consequences. The reason is that the Internet was never designed to replace hardware-limited circuit communication networks. It should be a set of shared resources that transmit packets of data from one place to another precisely, regardless of the network problem. TCP/IP ensures file integrity. It makes no guarantees when these files will reach their destination. Your files are no more or less important than anyone else's files.

Where do private lines and MPLS fit in?
You can achieve the highest network performance in terms of high bandwidth, low latency, noise, packet loss, and availability by building your own Internet. The classic way to do this is to run dedicated private lines between each site you want to connect to. This costs very quickly. Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks improve costs by providing private Internet between all desired sites at a price better than private leased lines, but much higher than the Internet.

Companies have adopted MPLS for internal communications between headquarters, offices, and data centers when performance is critical.

How to emulate SDN MPLS at a lower cost
There is no doubt that the performance of broadband cabling solutions is far superior to what could have been achieved ten years ago. You can get bandwidth levels of 100Mbps or even 1Gbps at reasonable rates. Contrast is an issue with cable, DSL, wireless 4G, and the internet itself.

What SDN controllers do is constantly manage their connection resources. You will need more than one connection for the SDN to be able to handle anything. This can include cable broadband, DSL, 4G, Internet access, private lines, and even satellite in remote areas.
