Ethernet WAN to Complement Your LAN
Author: John SheplerData traffic on your company's local area network (LAN) operates at 1 Gbps or higher. In most cases, it is so fast that the network is transparent. However, go to a source outside of your premises and just open things up. Wouldn't it be great to extend a LAN across town or between your remote sites? Well, maybe you can.

Networks can be divided into two categories: owned and leased networks. You configure and manage your company's network, commonly referred to as a LAN. When you leave the building, you connect to another network that acts as a utility. This is a WAN or Wide Area Network. Originally, these WANs were owned and operated by telephone companies and implemented their own standards. These include voice telephone lines, ISDN dial-up, T1 fibre, DS3 and SONET. Protocol conversion from Ethernet running on a LAN requires specialized hardware to connect to one of these standards.
Most external lines today connect directly to Ethernet without any protocol conversion. Providers can be telephone companies or competing service providers that operate their own fiber optic networks. Interoperability is facilitated by the Carrier Ethernet standard created by the industry consortium MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum).
Ethernet WAN service
Ethernet service providers generally offer three services that you may want to know about
An E-Line, or Ethernet Virtual Private Line, is a point-to-point service that connects two locations as if there were a very, very long Ethernet cable between them.
E-LAN or Ethernet Virtual Private LAN is for multiple sites that want to communicate as if they were on a private bridged Ethernet network.
E-Tree or Ethernet Virtual Private Tree is also a multipoint service, but it is mainly used for broadcasting, streaming or distribution of content. These are multiple services with a single root and multiple leaves.
Obtain Ethernet WAN service
Service in a metropolitan area is called Ethernet MAN or metropolitan area network. Over long distances outside area, Ethernet is an acronym for WAN or Wide Area Network.
You conclude a contract with a service provider or network operator that has points of presence in the places you want to connect with. You may have several to choose from.
The equipment installed at your site includes terminals with an Ethernet port that supports the desired network speed. Unlike older systems that required hardware replacement for each service level change, you can order Ethernet service at different speeds up to the limit of installed ports. The advantage is that you can pay for the level of service you need now and easily upgrade when you need more capacity. Often all it takes is making a change through your online services portal or a simple phone call.
Ethernet to Internet
The Internet is the ultimate wide area network, connecting almost everyone, everywhere. You can order dedicated Ethernet Internet access to connect your business to the Internet with the bandwidth you want. The advantage of a dedicated coupler is that the full width of the line is not affected by your elimination and other carrier customers. These lines are also usually symmetrical, meaning that the upload and download speeds are the same.
Why not use the internet to connect to your remote site and chat with your customers? Many companies do. Probably your cheapest option. What you give up is the ability to create a class of service so that sensitive applications like VoIP phone calls and video conferencing take precedence over less important applications like file transfers and backups. Internet performance is also somewhat unpredictable due to unpredictable congestion, insecure packet routing, jitter, latency and packet loss.
For businesses with multiple locations, a hybrid format may be preferable. Use dedicated Ethernet services to connect business locations and the Internet to communicate with suppliers and customers
