And the fibers?Ten years ago, fiber bandwidth was only available to large enterprises with big budgets. It was primarily provided by telephone companies through SONET services such as OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48. Even if you were close enough to fiber racing to qualify, the monthly fee was enough to blind you.
Oh, it's changed a lot in the last few years. The most popular fiber service now is Ethernet, and the prices aren't much higher than what you would pay for a T1 or T3 line...plus you get more bandwidth. The access level is typically 10 Mbps, rising to 10 Gbps with 100 Gbps available in some regions. Need more than that? Oh good?
More providers means more availability and better deals
The biggest change is who provides fiber optic internet service. Yes, popular TV series are still in the game with the classic SONET service. But they've also built fiber-optic Ethernet capabilities and slashed prices. The best prices come from advances in technology, but also from greater competition.
Who is the competition? They are independent network operators who have built their own regional and national networks entirely in fiber optics. All of these twisted pairs on the ground belong to the local telephone company. But fiber is a different game. Many suppliers have their own POPs (points of supply) which do not go through telephone exchanges. There is no need to negotiate the rental of last mile links. You install the barrels yourself.
What's so great about Ethernet?
don't care what protocol is running on your local network? Today's networks are about data packets, not phone calls. In fact, most of the traffic is digitized video. The default interface is an Ethernet port, so why not keep everything end-to-end in the Ethernet protocol?
As already mentioned, Carrier Ethernet has other advantages. The latest fiber optic Ethernet networks are more scalable. The old SONET system was configured with discrete levels of bandwidth, each requiring a unique interface. Ethernet is Ethernet. Only the speed changes, so the interface remains the same. If you want to switch from copper RJ-45 to optical fiber for 10 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s, there is a hardware change. Alternatively, if your service provider installs a Gigabit Ethernet port, you can change the bandwidth of your service from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps at will. You can upgrade faster than ever and only pay for the bandwidth you use, not the full speed your line can handle.
About the installation?
This can be a mistake if there isn't a lot of network infrastructure already in place. Most cities have abundant ground fiber and are accessible nearby. If your building is already "lighted up" with fiber optics installed and operational, you can get the service quickly and easily without any external construction costs. Otherwise it depends. If the point of presence is close enough and you or other building tenants want sufficient service, the carrier may cover the construction costs themselves. However, you may need to throw some away, so you need to be involved in deciding how much broadband fiber is right for your business.
I must point out that some of the most aggressive fiber providers today are cable companies. You think of them for television and broadband coaxial cable (DOCSIS). Cable broadband service is very convenient as it is shared by many users with expected performance variations. Behind the scenes, cable companies run their own fiber optic networks. Most of your city is lit by fiber, except for the last part of your building. Cable companies, like telephone companies and other providers, can operate fiber optic networks with dedicated symmetric Internet access and connect you to their fiber optic networks.
