Fiber Optic Ethernet Transport Offers Huge Advantages

Author: John Shepler

There are many ways to move your data from one place to another. Fiber optic Ethernet, also known as EOF or Ethernet over Fiber, has become the new gold standard. It will be hard to beat this valuable solution for the money.

Find out the prices and availability of Fiber Optic Ethernet services now. What is fiber optic ethernet?
Ethernet was not part of the equation when fiber optic lines were buried in the ground and power poles were laid down. The original standard was SONET (synchronous optical network). This standard is intended to be backward compatible with existing DS1 and DS3 multiplexed telephone calls for fiber optic transmission. Why fiber? A single pair of optical fibers has much more bandwidth than the old twisted-pair copper, microwave, and coaxial copper lines.

Ethernet was born in the computer industry for local area networks. Sending this data outside of a wired building or campus requires a protocol conversion so that the T-Carrier and SONET fiber can send packets instead of digitized phone calls. Decades later, Ethernet direct transmission efficiency was first standardized rather than converted to an older protocol. Two varieties have emerged. Ethernet over copper and Ethernet over fiber. Ethernet, microwave, laser, and line-of-sight wireless systems such as WiFi and WiMAX have also been designed for shorter distances.

One of the main advantages of fiber optic Ethernet
Carrier Ethernet has been adopted by competing telecom providers as well as legacy telcos. The first advantage is direct compatibility with computer networks. After all, it's Ethernet. No need to deal with the inefficiency of switching between other protocols. Just plug in and go. When you apply for a service like e-LAN, you can connect your LANs to different locations as if they were part of a larger network.

The second major advantage is that Ethernet is highly scalable. When you order traditional MAN (City Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network) services, you get a fixed speed line. T1 - 1.5 Mbps, DS3 - 45 Mbps, OC3 - 155 Mbps. This speed determines how much data you can transfer per unit and also determines the price you pay. Also, if your line services grow, you will need to upgrade to a different line standard and get all new terminal equipment. High speed service may or may not be available for upgrade

With Fiber Ethernet, you really don't have an upper limit. Each strand of fiber can potentially carry 10 Gb/s, and the wavelength can be multiplied by tens or even hundreds of 10 Gb/s channels. The fibers are so small that bundles of cables can contain more than a hundred fibers. It will be quite difficult to exhaust the forces.

The good thing is that you don't have to pay for all the features. You ask for a service level, say 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps, and you pay for it. If you find you need more, you can upgrade to a higher level of service over the phone or even through an online portal. You can get as much bandwidth as the bandwidth of the ports installed in your region. This is usually a minimum of 1 Gbps, with options for 10 Gbps or even 100 Gbps.

Best Advantage
With competition in the marketplace and the inherent high bandwidth of fiber, the price you pay per Mbps is lower than ever and often much higher than older SONET technologies. These are highly reliable channel prices, often with service level guarantees. Bandwidth is symmetrical with equal download and upload speeds and is dedicated to your use only.

Competitive bandwidth options
If you only need 10 or 25 Mbps bandwidth, copper Ethernet can give you the same benefits as fiber Ethernet. At lower speeds, 1.5 or 3 Mbps, the T1 line is still attractive.

Basement bandwidth options available include commercial cable broadband, wireless Internet service providers, satellite broadband, DSL phone lines, and broadband cellular. All are designed for the price-sensitive consumer market and then offered to smaller businesses with less demanding needs. The price per Mbit is very attractive. This is largely due to the fact that the bandwidth is distributed among users, and not allocated to one client. The bandwidth is also asymmetric. Download speeds are typically 10 times faster than upload speeds.

Wireless services have rather limited usage restrictions and are not suitable for downloading large software updates or transferring large files. Satellite is available almost everywhere, but there are latency issues that make it difficult to use phones and other real-time services.

Note that these services are almost always available online only. Fiber Ethernet can be configured as dedicated Internet access or as a private point-to-point line.

Which bandwidth service is best for your business? You have many other options that you can use and the prices may be better than what you expected. Find out now what fiber ethernet services are available for your business
