T1 lineThe T1 line has been the mainstay of many businesses for decades. They still exist, albeit for more specific situations. The main advantage of T1 lines is that they use standard twisted-pair telephone wire. If you can get landline service, you are more likely to get T1 service. This includes rural areas where there is not much choice.
T1 lines are very reliable, serviced quickly if something goes wrong and are for your use only. Width is symmetrical. In other words, the upload and download speeds are the same. This is important if you share large data files or back them up to the cloud.
T1 lines can be configured specifically for Internet access or point-to-point connections. They support ISDN PRI trunks for multiparty telephone systems and PBX systems. Their only limitation is bandwidth, which is fixed at 1.5 Mbps. It is quite slow in terms of broadband, but suitable for small retail shops, e-mail and casual web browsing. You can connect additional T1 lines to increase throughput to 3, 4.5, 6 or even 10 Mbps.
Ethernet over copper lines
Ethernet over copper (EoC) is a modern technological update of the legacy T1. It uses the same copper phone lines but can provide faster speeds. In urban areas, typically 10 or 20 Mbps bandwidth is used. Some support is also available for rural businesses, but not as comprehensive as T1 services. Additionally, the EoC is typically lower per Mbps than conventional T1 links. Often you can get two or more bandwidths for the same monthly rental.
T3 line
T3 lines belong to the same technology family as T1 lines. Bandwidth is much higher, 45 Mbps vs 1.5 Mbps. T3 refers to power lines that are coaxial, waveguide or microwave relay. T3 is currently delivered as a service over SONET fiber optics and is called DS3. Services such as T1, T3 or DS3 are highly reliable, dedicated and symmetrical.
Ethernet over fiber optic
Ethernet over fiber (EoF) is a technological enhancement of SONET's fiber optic service. So EoF replaces T3 and DS3 with the same bandwidth at a better price. Unlike T3 and DS3, Ethernet over fiber offers a wider range of bandwidth options rather than a fixed 45 Mbps speed. Usually you can get EoF services below 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps or even up to 100 Gbps. You also have the option to change your mind at any time to upgrade or downgrade your service level Usually no hardware changes are required. You are charged for the amount of bandwidth you order, not a fixed 45 Mbps.
Until recently, fiber optic services were limited to large metropolitan areas and were quite expensive. The emergence of competing service providers and the growing demand for cell towers to support 4G and 5G broadband has significantly increased the number of available fiber services. Many offices, business parks and retail outlets now have access to fiber optic bandwidth at competitive prices. Some lines are also available in rural areas.
