The Internet has two major advantages: it is available in almost every part of the world, and access to it is relatively cheap. Unfortunately, the public Internet also has some serious limitations: performance is questionable, and security is a serious concern.

When you install your own emergency equipment, you test the entire connection.

Most of us don't need to go that far. We can lease private point-to-point lines for any bandwidth you need. As long as you have enough bandwidth, network congestion won't be a problem. Packet loss, jitter and latency are kept to a minimum with dedicated private lines. No link traffic that doesn't belong to you.

You won't find this kind of performance on the internet. The Internet was designed to withstand line breaks and equipment failures. This is a great goal because your packets can take different paths between two specific endpoints. Packets will almost always arrive via TCP/IP... after all. This is why real-time applications such as VoIP telephony and video conferencing work better on private lines.

What private line services are available?
The two major competitors are SONET and Carrier Ethernet over Fiber. Yes, you can still get T1 lines and they work great. Bandwidth is a limitation, but T1 is 1.5 Mbps. Connecting a T1 line will give you 10 or 12 Mbps, but that's about it. Even at 10 Mbps, fiber is good. Fiber throughput starts at around 10 Mbps and goes up to at least 10 Gbps in most areas. For multiple locations or international connectivity, MPLS networks are a great choice.

SONET in fiber optic band
SONET is the original circuit switching technology used for fiber optic transmission. It is applied to a pair of fibers with a ring topology. It has to do with reliability. If one fiber is cut, the other takes the load for 50ms and continues.

SONET is the backbone of many networks, especially legacy telecommunications networks. The simplest service available is OC-3 at 155 Mbps. Other popular layers are OC-12 622 Mbps and OC-48 2.4 Gbps. 45 Mbps T-Carrier DS3 coax service is also multiplexed over OC-3 fiber service for most routes.

SONET is a very mature and reliable technology. Thus most businesses switch to fiber optic broadband when copper cabling cannot cover it. Prices have come down drastically in the last few years. However, a more flexible and cost-effective solution is now available. This is an Ethernet environment.

Ethernet bandwidth facility
If you're wondering why the world is taking Fiber Ethernet by storm, look no further than LAN owners. Ethernet is the dominant, relatively versatile protocol used for computer networks. Electronic communication was once analog phone calls. Most traffic now is digital data, and much of it IP video.

Carrier Ethernet, also called Ethernet over Fiber or EOFO, is an extension of LAN standards for long-distance operation in conventional environments. The advantage of Ethernet is direct connection to the LAN without the need for protocol conversion. Unlike SONET, it was designed with high scalability in mind. You can get almost as much bandwidth as you want and upgrade or downgrade quickly and easily.

Ethernet is generally cheaper on a Mbps basis than SONET or low-speed wired services. Most enterprises can afford 10Mbps EoF. Maximum upgrade to 100Mbps Fast Ethernet. GigE and 10 GigE are popular in the most demanding applications and large enterprises.

How does MPLS network provide private links?
MPLS, or Multiprotocol Label Switching, is a WAN based on a convenient routing technology called label switching. It is unique and difficult to hack in these networks. For this reason MPLS is also known as MPLS VPN or Virtual Private Network.

Yes, MPLS is a multi-user network, not strictly a private line. However, MPLS networks serve a limited number of paying customers and are carefully managed to ensure that each customer always has dedicated resources. You use it often or "blow up" or use more resources than you need until there is excess power.

Why MPLS? In large private networks, MPLS provides the ability to connect many locations at a lower cost than using multiple private lines. The cost advantage is that it is often better to use MPLS than private leased lines in two different locations internationally.
