Stuck in a big cloud migration? You can almost hear the huge suction of racks and servers being unloaded and transported to remote data centers. Well, that's kinda interesting. However, the trend to shift more ICT functions from in-house companies to cloud service providers is clear. The challenge is to connect very long distances with several hundred meters of Cat6 cable as efficiently as possible.

The Internet, which we have known since the mid-1990s, is an electronic text messaging system and a distributed library of text and images accessible from anywhere. Of course, this also extends to video content and e-commerce. Even after 20 years of improvement, the traditional Internet experience hasn't changed much. You can still access what you want through an email client or web browser. This is the next transformation of the Internet, making it more inclusive. This aims to extend the functionality of the Internet to remote applications and their associated databases and unified communications, rather than the venerable desk phone.

Where did the internet go so wrong?
What we call the old Internet is a faster network. This reflects the development of computers. How much have we spent over the years getting processors higher and higher in MHz, then more cores, kilobytes...megabytes...now gigabytes of RAM and similar storage now in terabytes ? Likewise, Internet access has moved from low-kbps dial-up connections over X.25 to DSL, T1, DS3 lines, broadband cable, SONET fiber and now Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet and even to 100-Gigabit - Ethernet developed. You may need some or all of the capacity to support your growing cloud functionality, but can you afford it?

The problem with traditional Internet access is that it was developed alongside traditional Internet services. What happens with this cloud model is that there is an incremental change in functionality without changing the corresponding communication stages. If you try to move your phone to a hosted PBX and your SaaS applications over the same old internet connection, you might find a desktop that doesn't work at all. Voice communication is interrupted and even disconnected. The video cries and stops. Your application is still running, but it seems to take a long time before you get a response from the system. At worst, you'll regret the day you tried to save money with all that new technology.

Can you reunite Humpty Dumpty?
It is possible to go back to the days when everything worked well and the system was not visible to all users. Employees want devices to get the job done, not precision technology that may or may not produce the same results twice in a row. For that to happen, you need to make what's happening in the cloud appear as if it's in the lobby now, not thousands of miles away. What is needed is a more convenient connection.

The Internet is a double-edged sword. Its appeal stems from the ability to connect anywhere, anytime at low rates compared to private telecommunications lines and networks. The downside is that it's a shared resource, with everyone and everything moving around in a large crowd. There may be traffic jams where everything moves at a snail's pace. Some information has mysteriously disappeared. How to get from point A to point B is a mystery, and routes change every minute for no apparent reason. It's fine if you're just looking up something on Wikipedia or buying parts in bulk. This system is designed to work with precision, as long as you have some flexibility in how quickly things can happen. These are real-time tasks such as telephony, video conferencing, and interactive applications that cannot entirely overcome the performance differences.

For this reason, many large enterprises rely on direct cloud access through private point-to-point connections such as Fast Carrier Ethernet or GigE fiber optics. These channels are closest to what you have on your local network. Traditional Internet access is managed via a much cheaper separate connection for less demanding use.

SD-WAN comes to the rescue
In recent years, a new approach to the Internet has emerged to improve the performance of broadband connections so that they can work with new cloud applications, but without spending a lot of money. This is a clever combination of connections that takes advantage of the fact that no two internet connections are likely to have the same problem at the same time. Broadband services can vary everywhere in terms of speed, latency, volatility and packet loss. Combine many different electronic communication and traffic fonts and you get much better service. Two or three low-cost cable, wireless, cable, or satellite services can be much cheaper than a dedicated single-channel service, but they give you almost the same experience.

What happens in a software-defined wide area network, as it's called, is that every path is constantly monitored online to see how it's performing. When the next packet arrives on the network, the system decides on the spot which path to use. The next packet in line can work the same or be routed over a different connection if preferred at that time. Many decisions are made in this SD-WAN, but it is invisible to you. You always have a connection from your local network.
