The name T3 is part of the T-Carrier system developed by Bell Labs during the post-war technology boom. The T3 672 has a speed of 45 Mbps, which is enough for making digital phone calls. This makes it more efficient than making 672 separate twisted pairs of copper wire like telephone lines. T3 was once transmitted over large coaxial cables or microwave transmission stations. It has recently been added to SONET fiber optic cable and is called DS3. DS3 is a data format that runs on a physical T3 line, so DS3 and T3 mean the same thing.
The channel version of T3 is used to handle these 672 phone calls, each on a different channel or time slot of the data stream. For data transmission, unreleased versions of T3 can handle data at speeds up to 45 Mbit/s, including popular packet-switched networks.
Ethernet replaces T3.
Currently, all communication is carried out over digital networks, and the most popular protocol comes from Ethernet. Even phones have switched to Ethernet interfaces, so instead of using separate cables, they connect to the same network as computers. This is called VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. When the computer and phone are on the same network, it is useful to transfer all data over the LAN and WAN using Ethernet.
