Dark Fiber Gives You Control

Author: John Schipper

More bandwidth than ever expected in enterprise IT infrastructure. This includes local and metro networks, as well as leased lines for extended bandwidth. But there's more to it than that. Equally important are parameters such as delay, packet loss and jitter. Security is a major concern for all network operations. Finally, the ability to make changes quickly, build solutions, and deliver resources online is critical to the smooth operation of the network.

Find dark fiber for business bandwidth Big bandwidth means big tube
Increased bandwidth requirements led to a massive transition from copper cables to fiber optics. Copper may still make sense for the office, but open network connections require fiber-optic capabilities.

Rented fiber lines are available from at least 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps, with 100 Gbps more readily available. They can be configured as point-to-point leased lines or as dedicated Internet access. Many companies need a combination of both. Internet is indispensable for communicating with customers and suppliers. Direct connections between cloud service providers and enterprise facilities ensure more consistent performance, lower latency, and better security.

The wavelength is similar to that of certain fiber links
Fiber optic cable is said to have unlimited bandwidth. While this may seem like a stretch, in practice it is very difficult to increase bandwidth. Each cable contains several fibers, sometimes up to 100 in a bundle. Each of these fibers can carry multiple non-overlapping data streams through the process of wavelength division multiplexing.

There are two schemes. Coarse wavelength division multiplexing can split a fiber into twelve or more color lasers called lambdas, all operating simultaneously. Dense wavelength division multiplexing, in which 80, 96, or more different wavelengths are calculated using more complex equipment.

Notice that each wavelength acts as its own fiber. This ignores other wavelengths in the same series. When you rent a wavelength, your data is not duplicated by other people's data. You can use the entire bandwidth exclusively, which can be up to 10 Gbit/s at this wavelength. Do you need more bandwidth? Rent different wavelengths. You don't need to stretch the cable again until the entire fiber bundle is loaded.

Dark fiber gives you complete control
What could be better than a wavelength? Get full fiber for yourself. Sounds great until you consider the cost of running your own fiber. Makes sense for your property, but what about cross-town or cross-country connections? Unless you are in the transportation services business, you will find that drilling your own fiber is very expensive.

There are ways to get your fiber. Rent unused rope from your service provider. More likely than you think. Remember that there is no point in burying a strand of fiber when you can bury fiber optic cable or even multi-strand cable for more. Operators only need to install fiber optics once and have an emergency power supply for decades.

These unused fibers are called "dark" fibers because they are not exposed to the laser beam. Burning lint can be your job. The operator only gives you access to each end of the fiber and the rest is up to you.

This is clearly beyond the reach of small businesses, but they are likely to be well served by the fiber options already available. Larger and more complex IT organizations can take advantage of dark fiber research labs and medical campuses, video content creation and transmission, engineering, manufacturing, and other challenging applications.

Benefits of black fiber
Having the exclusive rights to use all the fibers is the next best thing to building your own. You need to provide endpoints on each side and manage those resources. Your DWDM equipment can generate multiple bandwidth wavelengths that you can reasonably use.

Without a parallel client, the multiplexer does not need to add and remove connections on the go. Fiber only serves your site. There are no redundant devices in the phone which reduces latency. Unlike the Internet, you don't need a random router to route traffic. Not only is latency minimal, but there's no reason it could be any different from standard carrier routing decisions, and there's no bottlenecks as long as you don't overload individual fiber capacitances or wavelengths.

Security is another major benefit of dark fiber. There is no bandwidth sharing between clients. This is similar to the old copper line "nail" point to point. You have to trust the fiber carrier, but you don't have to worry about other customers. Of course, encryption over dedicated fiber gives you the highest security you'll ever get in point-to-point transmission.

Presence of dark fiber
Dark fiber is becoming increasingly available as it is used extensively for the Internet, cable television, and cell towers. Competing fiber optic carriers and some cable operators have plenty of spare capacity. They are more than happy to hire unused leads when dozens sit in the dark.
