We accept local area network (LAN). Every company owns it, but it's rarely seen outside of a wall outlet. You plug in your computer, printer, phone, etc. and it works.

In a sense, LANs are now equivalent to AC data. You don't care. You just used it. Communications and operations have long been standardized. Don't worry about the different flavors of Ethernet until you stop and wonder what voltage is coming out of the wall outlet.

What about this wide area network (WAN)? It's a global network that takes you out of the building and connects you to other locations in your business, to cloud services, and to everyone in the world. We don't think about the fact that electricity is converted to high voltage and there is a switching center between your location and the power generation. It is not as visible as the wire through the wall. If only WANs worked the same way (sigh!).

Difference between LAN and WAN
The big difference between LANs and metro or WAN networks is that LANs are usually invisible, while long distance links can be invisible. You probably won't have to worry about throughput, volatility, latency, or packet loss on your internal network. Wired LANs, in particular, handle these issues quite well. When you leave the building, these properties deteriorate. Ideally, that's not enough to hold you back, but sometimes that's a big deal.

When the Global Network Goes Down
Take the largest global network we use: the Internet. The internet is an incredible infrastructure that connects almost everyone to everyone. It was designed to be extremely robust from the start, automatically breaking the line and eliminating machine downtime. Limits of its design philosophy and popularity. SD-WAN tracks every WAN link packet and routes the most important packets over the best performing links at the time. This goes a long way in making highly visible web services look like invisible direct links
