Encrypted Wavelengths Offer High Bandwidth and High Security
From: John ShepplerAs data security becomes more of an issue, every weak link in the IT infrastructure needs to be identified and strengthened. If your network extends outside of your area, like most others, these MAN and WAN connections are a vulnerability that needs to be fixed. A relatively new service now does this for broadband users. This is called wavelength scrambling or encrypted waves.
The vulnerability of your connection can vary greatly depending on how your packets get from point A to point B. When the connection standard was point-to-point T1, it had pretty decent security. One line, consisting of 2 twisted pairs, is exclusively for its use. It was, as they say, “pinned”, that is, as close as possible to a rigid wire between two points. It wasn't until you stopped the service that the connection was "cut" and the resources passed to someone else.
Fiber optic wide area networks and multiuser networks
Not so today. If you don't have full dark fiber and turn it on yourself, you're splitting funds with some and probably many other users. Note that you do not share bandwidth if you request a leased line. It's just that high-bandwidth fiber, SONET or Carrier Ethernet, is multiplexed to carry multiple data streams, and your data is simply removed from the stream when it arrives at your home.
In MPLS networks, things get even more complicated. These networks are multi-user in nature. The service provider sends your data and the data of other customers on the same core network and delivers your and only your data to the edge of the network.
Then there is the internet...
Internet security issues should not be mentioned. It would be difficult to build a less secure network. But you don't use the Internet for anything fundamental, do you? If you have SDN connections via cable or 4G cellular broadband, you are probably using the Internet for transport without even knowing it.
Protect what is not safe
The solution to security problems is encryption. On public networks, these encrypted data streams are said to go through a "tunnel". You can do the encryption and decryption yourself or have your managed service provider do it for you.
Who needs encrypted radio waves?
High-demand, high-risk applications, such as medical data within hospital groups, require very high speed links that also include a high level of security. Layer 3 communication is on the edge of a relatively new high performance connection called Encrypted Waves. It is based on the same wavelengths generated by coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) or dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM). Each wavelength or set of wavelengths can provide 10 to 100 Gbps dedicated bandwidth. Multiplication refers to a set of wavelengths, called colors or lambda expressions, that move along the same strand of fiber. While renting a full wavelength increases your security, encrypting that wavelength actually increases security.
It's just in concept. The novelty is that layer 3 provides the wavelength already encrypted and protocol independent. Send whatever you want to the channel without worrying about the convenience of data flow.
Encrypted Wave services are now available
This is what the layer 3 encrypted wavelength service offers. AES-256 encryption, the gold standard. It manages key management through a separate MyLevel3 portal that has access to two-factor authentication. Ethernet speeds of 10, 40 and 100 Gb/s are supported. SONET/SDH at 10 Gb/s, and OTU 2, 2e, 3, and 4 are supported. FICON and Fiber Channel (Metro only) are supported on SANs at 8, 10, and 16 Gb/s. Low latency paths are available as an option for maximum performance.
